Shame and Miraculous Births

We were studying the first two chapters of Luke this afternoon and one student made a great observation.

In all previous miraculous birth narratives (Sarah, Rebekah, Hannah, Elizabeth) the barren woman's shame is removed by the pregnancy. In Mary's case, the virgin woman's shame is brought on by the pregnancy!

Love that picture. There is a print of it on a side wall of our sanctuary that I love to look at. It brings out the wonder of the situation and the humility of Mary in the midst of it. Who painted the original?
