Homeschool Moment

Jen: "Here it is, Anna, the Periodic Table of Elements."
Dietrich: "Is surprise in there?"
Jen: (confused) "What?"
Dietrich: "You know, the element of surprise!"

So Anna's learning the Table?

JPB said...

Anna already knows the table, she's just memorizing the molecular weights of the noble gasses. ;-)

It turns out that it was not wit and failure to catch wit in LEMONY SNICKET that led to Dietrich's comedic moment.

He really thought Surprise WAS on the periodic table of elements!

(Which raises the question of it's molecular weight.)

Did Dietrich memorize the table also?
I don't remember being introduced to this until I was in high school chemistry, or are we talking about the same table? I sure would like to listen in on some of the lessons; I'm sure I could learn a lot. Dietrich's reasoning sounds like mine!

Oh, you should send that in to Homeschool Legal Defense for their magazine.

I was kidding, Mom. They don't know the periodic table. They only know what it is.

This was the first introduction of the periodic table. It came up because we were talking about atoms, protons, neutrons, and electrons. Anna's doing chemistry this year. I didn't go over the table with Dietrich when we did it a couple of years ago, hence his ignorance.

In contemplating the molecular weight of surprise, I realized that perhaps the answer is the weight of the person in which the element was used on...particularly if he or she drops dead from the frightful experience.
:) Dietrich cracks me up.
