Christmas 2009 Slideshow

As usual, double click on the slideshow for a larger version at the Picasa albums site.

(I'm still working on catching up on the late summer and fall pictures ... someday perhaps.)

OK, It's been a while

I'm working on getting back up and running with some blog updates.

It's been a bit of a busy start of the year.

In the meantime, here is a slideshow of Balsbaugh life:

Nora Photo Shoot

OK, it's a bit uncanny, but this is just Nora.

I point the camera and she does the rest. No direction from me. No posing or positioning.

Grams and Grammy, these are worth double-clicking on the slideshow to see them larger. From the Picasa albums site, click full screen in the top left and then play the slideshow.

Boy are we in for something when she grows up :-)

These were from our recent trip to Echo Cave, just down the bluff from us all these years but hitherto unvisited.

A Little Bass Action

Anna landed this on her "Lil' Critters" pole with the help of her friend, Becca.

I was standing nearby with my fly rod yelling, "Just walk it up onto land! Just walk it back!!!"

It was probably 3 1/2 pounds -- enough to keep the fishing bug intact.

The Great Illinois Trip of 2009, "Part III: The AIC"

Now that the summer dust has begun to settle on the new job I can finally get back to some blogging!!!

So, picking up where we left off in the story of the Great Illinois Trip of 2009, we come to our day at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Though I love the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, our friendly upper-Midwestern collection, I must say, the Art Insitute of Chicago was pretty amazing -- even without the new modern wing having opened.

For me it was a time to encounter many old favorites or icons for the first time in person, including:

(detail)

Nighthawks, Edward Hopper

American Gothic, Grant Wood

The Child's Bath, Mary Cassatt

But even more fun was to discover some new works to delight in, like:

African Triptych

The Indestructibles, Philip Evergood

Clown with Dream, Walt Kuhn

Strange Worlds, Todros Gellar

The Black Place, Georgia O'Keefe

There was also a very nice exhibit of Yousef Karsh photographs. If you don't know Karsh, click here and you will recognize many of his iconographic photographs of famous people from Einstein to Bogart to Che Guevera.

The kids are always troopers in a museum and do, I think, get a lot out of our trips ... up to a point.

So there was a lot of this:

But also some of this:

And fortunately a few rooms like these:

The observation of the day, however, came from the youngest speaking member of the household on this painting:

Bordighera, Monet

We had finished the Chronicles of Narnia, oh, a month or two before the trip. And Nora called his one her favorite because it reminded her of the New Narnia at the end of The Last Battle.

Bravo, Baby Girl! "Further up and further in!" I love it.

Some of the best memories from Chicago have to be the trips back to Roscoe Village. No exception here. After the museum, we strolled down to Millennium Park and were captivated by the Cloud Gate.

Here is the entrance to the park:

Here is the Cloud Gate sculpture:

And here is a little slideshow:

Finally ... three more shots I really liked from the train ride and walk back to Roscoe:

Great Illinois Trip of 2009, "Part II: The Windy City"

After leaving Rock Island and dropping off Grandpa and Grandma's rental car at the Midway Airport we made our way to the Roscoe Village Guesthouse in a quaint little part of Chicago -- upscale small restraunts and shops, refurbished condos and the like.

Nora and Anna at the window of the Roscoe Guesthouse

It rained the first couple days we were there and poor Emily was sick the first day, so Monday we just had some down time. Tuesday we went to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. There was a great display on the future, a nice room full of Robotics and several other really fine instalations, but the real highlight for everyone was the tour of the U-505 submarine. It was the only German sub captured during WW-II and the story was pretty cool. The show that certainly would have been a highlight wasn't opening for another couple weeks.

Here's a slideshow from the museum trip:

Because we didn't have room in the van and didn't really want to hassle with parking in Chicago, we spent a lot of time on the L. 'Our stop' was the newly renovated Paulina Station. From there we had a five or six block walk back to the rooms, a lot of fun every time.

And each time we passed this curious little impression in the sidewalk, sparking a still unsettled debate as to the identity of the mammal that must have made the impression and the circumstances under which the impression could have been made!

What do you think it is?

The Great Illinois Trip of 2009, "Part I: Roots"

It's taken me some time to organize all the photos of our trip to Illinois, but here's the first slideshow.

We left St. Paul on Good Friday and drove to Rock Island, Illinois, where Jen's mom grew up (stopping in Nora Springs on the way there, of course). It was fun to meet and get to visit with, Aunt Sue, who has always given our kids cute cards and gifts on their birthdays despite never having met them before, to get to the meet some cousins and to spend some time in the greater Quad Cities.

While we were there we celebrated Nora's birthday. We saw the house Grandma Larson grew up in and th school she attended. We visited Virginia, the woman -- now of course quite elderly -- who helped take care of Grandma and her sisters when they lost their mother. We went out to dinner a couple of times with Aunt Sue and her sons Mike and Marty. And we went to Easter service at Edgewood Baptist Church where Grandpa and Grandma Larson were married and where the same pastor who married them still serves!

Here are just a few of the shots:

Look Who's All Grown Up With Her Dark Glasses

Yep. A whole handful!

The title of the post was Nora's enthusiastic response to being asked, "Are you five now, Nora?"

Happy Birthday, Baby Girl!

Nora Springs, Iowa

Some of you may remember our memorable visit to Dietrich, Idaho on a trip out West.

Well, on our way to Chicago via Rock Isaland, Illinois we saw a sign for NORA SPRINGS!

We exited to see how far out of the way it would be to swing through, and it was only three miles off the freeway, so we couldn't resist.

I would bet money that there are towns named Emily and Anna that we will run into at some point, but I'm not so sure about Charis. Half of me wants to just happen upon these places, the other half of me wants to see where they're at and undertake a quest.
