Over the last few days I have been involved in conducting interviews for a new position here at school. The last one was a phone interview. When it was done, I went back to my office and opened this quote. Amen.
I agree brother. Relationships that are established and built by "touching a person's heart" can be maintained by the telephone (or e-mail or letters) and then when you DO see the person face to face, there's a way in which it feels like you've never left. It's a sweet feeling to have friends like this; friends that you can naturally pick up a conversation with and that the miles cannot separate.
I feel this way with you, Jen. :) Though our e-mails haven't been as frequent lately, I still do love our "chats" via print.
"looking someone in the eye in print"...I like it.
I think you're right. You can also "look someone in the eye" over the phone once you have touched their heart.
Wow, I wonder what implications of this are for the nature of trust, our understanding of character, etc .... seems I read something like this the other day ... maybe it will show up as a post.

...or email, or Facebook, or MySpace.
But once you have touched the heart, I think there is a way to look someone in the eye in print.
First, what's the painting?
And, I need to read the book again. It has stayed with me and I don't know why.
The painting is Chagall's CRUCIFIXION (Chagall was a Jewish artist).

But...can't you also "look someone in the eye" over the telephone "once you have touched the heart?"
Does the medium of print have an advantage over a telephone conversation once said heart touching has been established?

It's just hard to "touch someone's heart" over the phone when the kids are screaming! That's why I prefer this medium.
I did mention maintaining relationships over the phone JJ. ;)
However, I totally agree with Jen. At THIS point in life, talking on the phone just doesn't work so well.
